Google is rolling out a suite of AI-powered shopping updates ahead of the holiday season, aiming to make online shopping more natural and less tedious. Key features include conversational shopping in AI Mode, enhanced shopping suggestions in the Gemini app, agentic checkout, and an AI tool that can call local stores to check product availability.

AI Mode lets users ask natural language questions, receiving tailored responses with images, price comparisons, reviews, and inventory information, powered by Google’s Shopping Graph with over 50 billion listings. Gemini app users in the U.S. can now get richer, more detailed suggestions instead of simple text responses. Sponsored listings will appear in AI Mode, though not yet in Gemini’s mobile app.

Agentic checkout allows users to track prices and authorize Google to complete purchases on their behalf via Google Pay, working with merchants like Wayfair, Chewy, Quince, and select Shopify stores. This feature aims to simplify purchasing while driving repeat traffic for retailers.

Google’s AI calling feature uses Duplex technology to contact local stores about product availability, pricing, and promotions, returning a summary to the shopper. It’s initially available in the U.S. for categories like toys, health & beauty, and electronics. Merchants can opt out, and AI calls are clearly disclosed to store staff.

These updates demonstrate Google’s push to integrate AI deeply into eCommerce, making shopping faster, more efficient, and more personalized, while maintaining transparency and security for both users and retailers.
