How Bottega Veneta weaved China’s forever it bag

From Milan to Shanghai, maison’s craft-first philosophy and revived Veneta bag reaffirm quiet luxury’s enduring power.
“For me, Bottega Veneta is craft.”
The answer came instinctively. Speaking backstage after the house’s Fall 2026 show in Milan, Chinese actress and award-winning director Shu Qi distilled the essence of the house. Asked what the Italian brand represented to her, she did not reference fashion or fame, but craft.
Few luxury houses have allowed material integrity to define them so consistently. And fewer still have translated that language so effectively across markets. From Shanghai to Milan, Bottega Veneta’s rise has unfolded not through overt symbolism but through the quiet authority of leather, artisanship, and restraint.
As creative director Louise Trotter introduces a renewed expression of the Veneta bag — a signature design rooted in the brand’s archives — the house is once again returning to its most persuasive narrative: that luxury is something felt before it is seen.
A language woven in leather
At the center of Bottega Veneta’s story lies Intrecciato, the distinctive leather weave first developed in 1975 in Vicenza. First applied to bags, it has since evolved into a tactile and aesthetic signature that extends far beyond accessories.
“Intrecciato used to feel like a logo,” says Ava Foo, the fashion blogger with more than 3.5 million followers on Weibo. “Today, it is closer to a language. In social environments where visible branding has become less essential, it offers a form of recognition that feels more personal and more refined.”
Her observation reflects a broader recalibration of taste. Texture and craft now carry symbolic weight once reserved for monograms. In this context, Intrecciato’s enduring presence feels less nostalgic than quietly contemporary — a visual rhythm that communicates discernment without the need for explanation.
Through decades of reinterpretation — scaled up, softened, transposed onto ready-to-wear and lifestyle objects — the weave has become what the house often describes as “a living language.” It is a system capable of change while retaining a sense of continuity.
The appeal of precision
For fashion commentator Mark Long, Intrecciato’s relevance lies partly in its composure.
“In cities where visual competition is intense, it acts as a kind of aesthetic filter,” he tells Jing Daily. “It transforms texture into identity. That sense of discretion feels increasingly meaningful.”
Long also notes the subtle attraction of order within the weave’s geometry. The disciplined interlacing of leather strips produces a surface that appears both organic and structured — an interplay that aligns with contemporary ideas of balance in design.
“It is not a loud expression of luxury,” he says. “It is closer to intellectual decoration. In a time shaped by speed and constant change, the presence of something so carefully made can feel grounding.”
Such qualities have helped sustain the house’s momentum during a period of volatility across the luxury sector. While parent group Kering reported overall revenue declines in 2025, Bottega Veneta maintained steady growth, reinforcing its reputation for resilience.

Returning to an icon
Trotter’s reintroduction of the Veneta bag builds on that sense of measured evolution. The silhouette traces its origins to a relaxed sack-like design created in the 1970s by co-founder Renzo Zengiaro and later formalized as Veneta in 2002.
For Summer 2026, the bag appears in four sizes — including a playful Baby version — and features a newly padded Intrecciato constructed from ultra-soft nappa leather strips measuring 1.2 centimeters in width. The result is a supple, dimensional texture that enhances the bag’s fluid character while maintaining its understated presence.
The design’s ease of movement has always been part of its appeal. Without rigid structure or excessive hardware, the Veneta adapts naturally to the wearer’s posture, shifting effortlessly between hand-held and shoulder carry. Offered in 11 colorways ranging from deep Espresso to luminous Blue Venezia, it embodies a restrained versatility suited to contemporary wardrobes.
Long views the return as quietly strategic. “For longtime clients, it reconnects with memory,” he says. “For younger audiences, it feels like discovery. Revisiting a foundational silhouette reinforces the house’s sense of permanence.”
Cultural conversations, carefully staged
Beyond product, Bottega Veneta has cultivated a distinctive rhythm of engagement in China. Rather than relying on oversaturated visibility, it has favored episodic moments that emphasize atmosphere and cultural dialogue.
Literary installations, art-inflected runway settings, and localized campaigns rooted in emotion rather than spectacle have all contributed to a perception of depth. A notable example was the immersive Shanghai project built around poet Yu Xiuhua’s anthology In Such a Staggering World, where visitors gradually dismantled a sculptural brand logo by taking away individual books — a poetic gesture that subtly reframed the relationship between identity and ownership.
Such initiatives have allowed the house to position itself as both participant and observer within China’s evolving luxury landscape, aligning craftsmanship with broader ideas of individuality and expression.
Continuity as strategy
The broader trajectory of Bottega Veneta’s expansion in China has been characterized by steady pacing rather than unsustainable acceleration. From its first boutiques in the late 2000s to later digital ventures and large-scale cultural activations, the house has built familiarity without overexposure — a pitfall for many competing brands who have moved too quickly without the proper strategy to back it up.
Equally important has been Bottega Veneta’s insistence on longevity as a form of value. Programs such as The Certificate of Craft for key bags, a lifetime warranty, signal a commitment to durability that contrasts with the rapid product turnover often associated with fashion.
This emphasis on time — on objects designed to accompany rather than simply impress — continues to shape the brand’s positioning. In an environment where trends can appear and fade within a season, continuity itself becomes a form of distinction.
A quiet future
If Shu Qi’s reflection suggests anything, it is that Bottega Veneta’s influence rests on the ability to translate heritage into a living design language. Under Trotter, that language feels less like revival and more like refinement — a gentle adjustment of proportion, texture, and emotion.
The renewed Veneta bag, with its softened structure and renewed tactility, captures that sensibility. It does not seek to redefine the house so much as to clarify what has always been there.
In a market attentive to nuance, such clarity can be powerful. Luxury, after all, rarely depends on volume. Sometimes it is enough — as Shu Qi implied — to let craft speak.
