Demand for pre-loved jewellery is booming right now – just look to the likes of Rihanna, Hailey Bieber and Gigi Hadid, who are regularly seen dripping in vintage gems. Want to follow suit? Luckily, eBay is expanding its Authenticity Guarantee programme to fine jewellery, meaning you can make your pre-loved purchases with complete confidence.

“We’ve seen real success in other categories we’ve launched [Authenticity Guarantee] in: watches, handbags and sneakers,” Keith Metcalfe, EU director of luxury at eBay, tells Vogue. “The proof points are there that this is something that customers want.”

Brands like Cartier, Chopard and Van Cleef & Arpels will be covered by the scheme, which includes fine jewellery priced at £500 and above. Unbranded antique and vintage pieces will be verified as part of the initiative, too, as an increasing number of customers look for unique heirlooms.

The purity and metal type, clarity of gemstones and condition of the piece will be checked by experts from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), along with whether a diamond is lab-grown or mined, for example. “We’re really thrilled to be collaborating with the GIA on this because they’ve got 90 years of experience; they invented the four Cs [cut, colour, clarity and carat] system,” Metcalfe says, adding that each verified piece will come with an authentication card with a QR code, allowing customers to find out more information about the item.
